Joe (Guiseppe) Sorgiovanni |
Giuseppe Sorgiovanni (Joe) and his Father travelled from his small village of Caulonia in Calabria, Italy in 1928 to start a new life in Australia. Joseph settled on a small farm in Third Street Harvey where he toiled the fertile soils of the Harvey River flat lands known as a prime horticulture region. Joe was eventually followed to Harvey by his siblings who thrived in their new country, working hard to make a better life. In partnership with his wifes family, the Scolaro's, Joe's large plantation of orange trees led to the development of Harvey Fresh, a family owned and run local producer of fruit juices and dairy products which now exports across the globe. In 1999, the company moved into the area of viticulture, planting a vineyard across the street from the dairy factory reflecting the Italian's love of wine. The Joseph River Estate range, a premium wine label, is Joe's namesake, representing the history, heritage and hard work that has gone into these exquisite wines. Small parcels of the finest wine grapes are selected from Harvey River Bridge Estate and a vineyard in Margaret River, to produce the Joseph River Estate range of wines, ensuring premium fruit-driven varieties. In 2010, our Joseph River Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 was honoured to receive Australia's most prestigious award, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy, for Best Young Red of 2008 and 2009. We're sure Joe would have been real proud of this achievement. |
